Hello again, and happy 2019! It’s hard to believe that a mere couple of weeks ago we were idly floating in lakes of gravy and heroically summiting mountains of sugar cookies, revelling in the overindulgence of the season. Or perhaps we were achy and shaky and hacking up pieces of what we hoped weren’t our lungs - or both! Winter in North Idaho is, after all, nothing if not a fine example of extremes. And speaking of extremes, another thing I get slightly tired of at the end of every year is the preponderance of “best of” lists -- Best Cat Memes of 2018 (not a thing, hopefully), Top 2018 Dog Names (definitely a thing), Longest Government Shutdowns (sigh), and the one category I actually pay attention to: Best Books.

Now, “best” is an extremely subjective opinion for any item, and always depends hugely on the audience, but usually best book lists are based on reviews and/or sales, and are generally a decent indication of the popularity of particular titles. But why should the New York Times or Publishers Weekly or Amazon have all the fun? Rhetorical question, but I’ll answer it anyway -- they shouldn’t! So, without further ado, I present to you:

Because everything looks more important when it’s centered and in all caps. Also, I’m not claiming that you’ll learn much from this listicle apart from the fact that EBCL readers really like thrillers, and C.J. Box in particular. But maybe, just maybe, it will give you some ideas for what to read next, or provide some insight into what your neighbors might be reading, without having to creepily peer in their windows, squinting to read the spines in the pile of books on the coffee table. Just kidding - please don’t do that. Read this list instead!

*This list represents the most checked-out adult and young adult books of 2018, in descending order of popularity.
And remember, of course, that all of these books can be found at your friendly local library :)
