10 AM: Love & Logic Concepts to Enhance Functioning in All Families All the Time

Foster Cline, MD will share common sense and energizing information that clarifies the philosophy, skills and techniques underlying Love and Logic communication and functioning. Foster’s “laugh and learn” presentation will include slides and videos that demonstrate and clarify basic concepts. Questions, doubts, and discussion are encouraged. The dangers of helicopter responses—first introduced in Love and Logic materials—highlight the importance of employing empathy alongside consequences. Strategies for addressing challenges without resorting to punishment or anger have struck a chord with audiences around the world.

About the presenter:

Foster and his wife Hermine (Hermie) arrived in Sandpoint in 1993. Foster continues to work with parents of children treated in a Montana residential school.

12 PM: Sow Bliss, Learn to Plant a Tree!

Through it all—trees provide a source of inspiration and stability. Plant a tree today! We’ll even send you home with a FREE tree seedling and instructions to properly plant and care for it!

It’s a celebration of trees. The celebration will kick off with an outdoor, rain or shine, talk and tree planting demonstration by ISA Certified Arborist, Paige Belfry on the Sandpoint Library grounds. Topics will include site and species selection, how to select good quality nursery stock, and all aspects of proper tree planting. Learning to identify the root collar, properly size the depth and width of the hole, staking techniques and watering requirements will be discussed and demonstrated so you will be able to plant your next tree with confidence. (Wear weather-appropriate clothing for the outdoor tree planting class.)

Free tree seedlings will be available, while supplies last, and attendees can enter a raffle to win a potted tree and Tree Gator watering bag.

Celebration Opportunities Include: (if weather requires, this part will be moved indoors at the Sandpoint Library)

  • “Ask an Arborist” Booth: bring any and all of your tree questions to ask an Arborist
  • Tree Ring Prints: Make a large tree ring ink print from a local tree; all materials provided. Prints make a beautiful, framed decoration or gift
  • For the literary-minded: Join us in composing a poem about trees (the winning entry may be published by The Sandpoint Reader)
  • If you enjoy a more hands-on approach: check out the woodworking demonstration, made possible by, you guessed it, trees!
  • Have A Tree Planted in Your Name: Participants can also have a tree planted in their name when they make a pledge to take on one earth-friendly habit and learn how to use iTree to see what benefits an individual tree offers

Sandpoint’s urban forest encompasses all trees planted within city limits, and these trees and the benefits they confer to our community belong to each and every one of us. There will be other activities around town including a goofy tree-themed scavenger hunt (perfect for a group of friends), and a bingo card of self-guided activities that is sure to have trees on your brain. Come Out to the Library to Celebrate Trees & Arbor Day!

About the presenters:

Paige Belfry is an ISA Certified Arborist, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, has her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and is co-owner of Ooh La La Arboriculture, a Sandpoint-based tree care company focused on the health of trees. She is a tree expert and is well-versed and experienced in pruning trees and shrubs according to industry standards and best practices. As a part of her job, Paige enjoys helping to teach about trees and their care. She believes we can all take ownership in our shared urban forest through small actions like planting, watering, or pruning a tree properly, and we can all share that wealth of knowledge with our friends and neighbors.
