The most important part of a summer reading program is READING. When children fail to read for three months, it can take until the end of November to regain the reading skills they had at the end of the previous school year. When, however, children read as few as six books over the summer, they maintain the skills that they have spent the past school year developing and honing. We have lots of fun prizes to encourage your children to READ this summer.
Pick up a summer reading log for your preschooler.
Read and do early literacy activities so that your child can earn prizes.
You can also print up a log here. The log is double-sided and printed on legal sized paper.
Pick up a reading game board at the Information Desk and start reading. When you complete the game board (that’s 10 hours of reading!), come into the library to pick up your prize and enter your ticket into the monthly prize drawing. Be sure to pick up (or print) another game board and keep reading!
1st Game Board (10 hours): free book
2nd Board (20 hours): swimming pass at SWAC
3rd Board (30 hours): water bottle
4th Board (40 hours): summer reading t-shirt
Additional Game Boards: free books
Prize drawings will be held at library-sponsored events at the end of each summer month. Tickets turned in during the month of the drawing will be included in the prize drawing. Drawing winner will get to choose a book series that the library will order for them. There are series limitations due to cost and availability. Additional prizes will be drawn at the August party.
Wednesday, June 28th @ The Ribbles Build a Residence (Sandpoint Library)
Thursday, July 27th @ Magic Show (Sandpoint Library)
Thursday, August 24th @ Summer Reading Tie Dye Party (City Beach)****
There is no minimum expectation of the number of books a child should read; however, research has shown that children who read at least 6-8 books at their reading level, maintain their reading skills over the summer.
Pick up or print a Build a Better World Challenge sheet at the Information Desk and complete the four "assignments".
When you complete the challenge, fill out the ticket and hand it in by Monday, August 21st. We will draw one lucky winner at the Tie Dye Party on August 24th at City Beach.
Share a picture of you doing one (or all) of the assignments to our Facebook page. Sharing is optional but we'd love to see your accomplishments and share them with the community.
